Postpartum Recovery

Postpartum recovery essentials your insurance may cover

Last updated: August 29, 2026

Recovery after birth is real medical territory — swelling, back pain, blood pressure changes, elevated blood clot risk — yet most moms leave the hospital with a pamphlet and nothing else. What few realize: many of the items that make recovery safer and more comfortable are medical equipment your insurance may already cover.

The items that do the heavy lifting

1. Breast pump

The best-known benefit: most plans cover a double-electric pump as a preventive benefit under the ACA. See our full guide to getting a pump through insurance.

2. Maternity support brace / belly band

Supports the lower back and abdomen while ligaments and core muscles recover — useful late in pregnancy and in the months after delivery, especially after a C-section.

3. Graduated compression stockings

Help manage the leg swelling common in late pregnancy and postpartum, and support healthy circulation while your body sheds pregnancy fluid volume.

4. DVT prevention device

Pregnancy and the weeks after delivery carry an elevated risk of blood clots (deep vein thrombosis). A portable compression device helps keep blood moving — particularly relevant after C-sections or when mobility is limited. Whether it's appropriate for you is your doctor's call; when ordered, many plans cover it.

5. Blood pressure monitor

Postpartum preeclampsia can develop after delivery, and providers increasingly want moms checking blood pressure at home. An automatic monitor makes those checks easy and lets you report real numbers to your provider.

6. TENS unit

Drug-free relief for back and pelvic pain through gentle electrical stimulation — an option many moms prefer while nursing.

How to get them covered

These are all durable medical equipment (DME), which means three things: your plan's benefits determine what's covered, a physician order is required, and it has to come from an insurance-enrolled supplier. We handle all three — free benefits verification in 24–48 hours, then we coordinate the order with your doctor. The full process typically takes 2–4 weeks, so starting during pregnancy is ideal. Start with the 2-minute form or read the insurance FAQ.
